Fessenheim: Showcase Dismantling Project Receives Approval from the Inquiry Commission
The dismantling of the Fessenheim nuclear power plant has reached a critical milestone with the favorable opinion from the inquiry commission on the dismantling authorization request. On this occasion, Cédric Lewandowski, Director of Nuclear and Thermal Power Plants, shared this news in a Linkedin post, accompanied by an educational video detailing the upcoming operations.
Following the government decision to shut down the two Fessenheim reactors in February and June 2020, EDF seized the opportunity to demonstrate its expertise in managing the complete lifecycle of its nuclear facilities. The dismantling of Fessenheim is intended to be exemplary. In a Linkedin post, Cédric Lewandowski, director of nuclear and thermal power plants, updated on this project. Specifically, he posted a very comprehensive video on the subject.
He explains that: “218 contributions were submitted, expressing an 80% positive view of the proposed solution for the dismantling of the plant. After analyzing the file and all the contributions, the inquiry commission issued a favorable opinion without reservation on this file, highlighting ‘EDF’s professionalism and its capacity to undertake such a project’.”
While awaiting the dismantling decree scheduled for 2026, EDF has already begun preparing the site. Key actions include evacuating the fuel, decontaminating the primary circuits, and removing the main equipment from the machine room. ■
